This dining room serves multiple purposes as a workstation, reading corner and dining area, but there were too many unconnected items in a very small space. By choosing only a few accessories to display on the existing shelves, clearing away the clutter on the writing table, and replacing the chair in the corner with another from upstairs, we created a more inviting room where favorite pieces of art are more noticeable and the dining room table is all the more accessible.
These homeowners were seeking a more spacious feeling in their family room, so we began by moving the recliner closer to the television for easier viewing. This opened up the traffic flow to the room, and also allowed us to create a second, more intimate seating area near the fireplace where the owners now often sit to read. A few artful touches on the mantel and the red chest give this once burdened corner a whole new look - by using only what we found in the home!
The "floating chair" and the lack of color in this room make it feel a bit cold. We pulled the couch and chair closer to the fireplace in order to create a more intimate seating area and to bring the eye to the center of the room. Color and warmth come into the room through the use of pillows, throws and natural elements such as plants and branches.
Our goal in this redesigned space was to make this living room a relaxing destination instead of an overlooked extra room. We placed the furniture in a more inviting arrangement across from the dining room entrance so as to draw people in to sit down. We also achieved balance in the room by rehanging similarly framed prints on either side of the window.
The Vegas own a vibrant collection of paintings, photographs and mementos from their travels, but none of them got much individual attention in the original photos. By editing down the number of accessories and photos, we made the best architectural details of the room - the large window and the beautiful fireplace - much more noticeable. By incorporating simple changes such as removing the curtain panels on the window and eliminating some accessories from the hearth and bookshelves we have easily made this room feel much more spacious and light.
This attractive living room had a few balancing issues - for instance, the couch was in a awkward position and too far away from the television for comfortable viewing. By putting the couch on a slight angle, we eliminated the need to make it look centered under the windows. Additionally, the couch is now more oriented toward the television and the other seating in the room. Changing out the coffee tables and reaccessorizing the shelves and mantel lighten and brighten the room and make a lovely space even more colorful.
Redesign is essentially the art of using what you already have -
and finding the perfect place for all of the things you love to be with.
If your things aren't coming together to create a space you love to be in, consider a room redesign by Spruce Interiors. Your space can absolutely be transformed like the ones pictured below!
This owners of this space were seeking "comfort and color" in their surroundings and asked us to give them more seating areas for television watching and conversation. In our redesign, paired rockers and a rug define the fireplace area as a destination for a quiet chat. In the television room, we created a "furniture family" with an existing chair and an ottoman which can serve as either a footrest and a place to set a drink. A punch of color comes into the space via the placement of oil paintings, pillows, and vases which add both texture and warmth to each of these rooms.
The McDougall Living Room
In order to achieve a less cluttered feel in this home's main living area, we removed several unnecessary pieces of furniture (and the husband!). The red chairs and ottoman came in from the den and now face the couch (which does not appear in the photo), thereby creating a much more comfortable conversation area. A champagne color on the walls adds contrast to the freshly painted fireplace trim. Pairing the large mirror with existing floral prints over the mantel brings drama to this lovely focal point.
What is a REDESIGN?
